March in Philly is exploding with incredible independent film events. If you’re interested in watching documentaries about liberation movements, check out In Excess about Philly’s trash systems, Coexistence, My Ass! about a comedian using her platform to challenge political violence in Israel-Palestine, and WTO/99 about the 1999 Seattle protests of the World Trade Organization’s impact on human rights.

This month also offers many opportunities for celebration: watch Sinners with a crowd in honor of its historic 16 Academy Award nominations; dance the night away at Rashid Zakat’s Revival!: An Audio-Visual Meditation; and watch the groundbreaking 90s movie Just Another Girl On The I.R.T.featuring a live conversation with director Leslie Harris. cinéSPEAK Presents: In Process with Jess X. Snow

cinéSPEAK’s In Process series–which offers intimate space for local filmmakers to share about their creative process–is back, this time featuring prolific artist Jess X. Snow in conversation with A.E. Hunt. Snow is an Academy-Shortlisted filmmaker and multi-disciplinary artist whose films bring the inner healing journeys of queer Asian migrants to the big screen. They will screen Little Sky, Safe Among Stars, and Your Breath is a Portal. Come early for refreshments and mingling and afterward migrate to Human Robot Brewery to continue the conversation.

Lightbox Presents: In Excess

Combining CCTV footage, subterranean sewer cams, and intimate vignettes of the people who keep the city clean, In Excess traces the journey of Philadelphia’s trash as it flows onto a surprising global path. Along the way, it reveals hidden ecosystems of waste management and the unexpected ways discarded materials resurface long after they’ve been thrown away. Stay after the film for a conversation with the (local!) filmmaker, Melissa Langer.

cinéSPEAK x Two Locals Brewing Company Movie Mondays: Sinners

Movie Mondays is a new monthly gathering every second Monday of the month celebrating Black filmmakers. This first screening will feature Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (which has received a historic 16 Academy Awards nominations!) In this genre-bending horror film, trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. Enjoy happy hour 5-7 PM, BYO dinner, and eat free popcorn!

Revival!: An Audio-Visual Meditation

Multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and DJ Rashid Zakat invites the public to a collective celebration of the visual and sonic frequencies that spill out of the Black spiritual and ecstatic experience. Revival! draws on archival footage, original video art, live dance, and musical performance, pulling the audience into an immersive art installation that allows them to connect, reflect, and transcend. This event is part of the exhibition Homeboyz in Innerspace, which is open until March 21.

Be Reel Micheaux Presents: Just Another Girl On The I.R.T.

In this 1992 film, Chantel’s dreams of escaping her tough Brooklyn neighborhood to become a doctor are complicated when she discovers she’s pregnant. Groundbreaking in its centering of a young Black woman’s experience, this frank, funny, coming-of-age tale was a Sundance sensation. Director Leslie Harris will join for a post-film conversation, moderated by Vincent Williams and Len Webb of The Micheaux Mission podcast and Stephanye Watts of Be Reel Black Cinema Club.

cinéSPEAK x Vox Populi Third Thursdays: Coexistence, My Ass!

This Third Thursday features the Philly premiere of an incredible new film. Noam Shuster Eliassi grew up the literal poster child for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process before making a hard pivot to stand-up comedy and political satire. But as the region sinks deeper into devastating violence, she must meet the moment by challenging her audiences with hard truths that are no laughing matter.

This 2025 immersive archival documentary depicts the four-day clash between the then-emerging World Trade Organization (WTO) and the more than 40,000 people who took to the streets of Seattle in 1999 to protest the WTO Conference and the WTO’s impact on human rights, labor, and the future effects of continued globalization. Diamond Screen Presents: Women’s Film Festival

Now in its 10th year, the Women’s Fest, collectively organized by Diamond Screen and the Mise en Femme women’s film group, features a juried selection of a few of the many fantastic films created by women writers, directors, and cinematography students in the Film and Media Arts department at Temple University. In previous years, Women’s Fest winners have gone on to be featured in elite festivals around the country.
